Theft of energy services is not just illegal – it’s dangerous! Over the years, SECO Energy employees have seen some very inventive and totally lethal ways that consumers have devised to divert power or to cause consumption to be measured inaccurately as it flows through the meter.
Even if an energy thief isn’t hurt or killed in the act of diverting power or meter tampering, theft of electricity is not a victimless crime. The cost of stolen power is absorbed by the cooperative. That increases rates so the honest members end up paying for the stolen electricity. If you see suspicious activity (extension cords from house to house, metal objects or magnets on meters, report it to as soon as possible. You can remain anonymous.
