SECO Energy is beginning a system-wide transition from High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) area and streetlights to Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. Over the next one to three years, existing HPS fixtures throughout our service area will be replaced with LED fixtures, following a planned upgrade to maintain the reliability of the cooperative's lighting system.

The transition will occur in phases, beginning with major roadways, high-traffic corridors, and critical roadway segments, followed by residential streets and other lighting applications.

Fixture Types Include:

Existing HPS vs. New LED (Dark Sky Friendly)

For those with existing HPS lighting, there will be no cost for the conversion to LED fixtures when the replacement is a like-for-like installation using the same fixture style and the same or similar lumen output. No action is required for the standard conversion to occur.

Requests for expedited replacements or changes to existing poles, fixtures, or lighting configurations may result in additional costs in accordance with SECO Energy's applicable tariffs, policies, and procedures.

SECO Energy's crews will coordinate the work to minimize disruption, and in most cases, fixture replacements will be completed without extended power interruptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

The LED fixtures are designed to provide “like-for-like” lighting levels equivalent to the existing HPS fixtures being replaced. The lumen output of the LED fixtures is selected to match the HPS lumen performance as closely as possible while improving lighting efficiency and visibility.

Although LED lighting may seem brighter due to the whiter light spectrum, the lighting design is intended to maintain the appropriate illumination levels for the application area.

“Like-for-like” means the LED fixture selected for replacement is engineered to provide lighting performance equivalent to the existing HPS fixture.

Examples may include:

100W HPS With a lumen output of 7,500 replaced with 42W LED that has a lumen output of 6,020.

250W HPS with a lumen output of 24,750 replaced with 140W LED that has a lumen output of 19,669.

400W HPS with a lumen output of 42,000 replaced with 239W LED that has a lumen output of 29,597.

The LED fixture may use less energy while delivering similar or improved usable light levels.
