Strengthening Rural Communities

 

DEAR MEMBER,

 

The United Nations has proclaimed 2025 the “International Year of Cooperatives,” recognizing how cooperatives support local economies and community development. Guided by the principle of Concern for Community, SECO Energy focuses on improving the lives of our members across Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Levy, Marion, Pasco, and Sumter Counties.

 

This past year, SECO Energy explored community solar and microgrids to improve energy resilience and sustainability, particularly in rural areas. We held a series of meetings with local officials and key community leaders to identify ways to enhance life in Central Florida, resulting in the formation of a committee to address community needs and plan future projects that will directly benefit our rural communities.

 

As your trusted community partner, we’ve begun replacing older high-pressure sodium (HPS) area lights with LED communal lighting to improve energy efficiency and safety. At the same time, we’ve continued to convert overhead power lines to underground construction that helps reduce weather-related disruptions in electric service. We have completed system improvement projects across the service area, including new substations and upgrades that increase capacity at some of our existing substations. Our Expansion and Improvement Plan continues to move forward to ensure services remain reliable and sustainable to meet the ever-increasing demand for safe and affordable energy.

 

Through educational opportunities and community programs like Youth Tour and scholarships for high school students, we hope to inspire the next generation to pursue careers in the energy industry, contributing to a future of safe, efficient, and innovative energy solutions to strengthen our communities.

SECO Energy completed its annual member-wide customer satisfaction survey, where over 1,200 members were asked to participate. The member responses were sent to the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI®), a company that measures customer satisfaction across multiple industries throughout the entire United States. For 2024, SECO Energy received an ACSI score of 91 on a 100-point scale.[1]

 

SECO Energy’s score is higher when compared to publicly measured investor-owned utility scores and municipal utility scores reported in the syndicated 2024 ACSI Energy Utility Study and places SECO Energy 17 points higher than the average investor-owned utility score of 74, as well as 16 points higher than the average municipal utility score of 75, per the industry ratings.

 

ACSI® is one of the oldest and most highly regarded industry satisfaction studies which publishes annual customer satisfaction results for approximately 400 companies across about 40 industries and 10 economic sectors based on roughly 200,000 customer interviews.

If you have a home office, look for opportunities to save energy in your workspace. ENERGY STAR® rated equipment consumes up to 50% less energy than standard models. Avoid phantom load by plugging equipment like computers, printers, and scanners into a power strip, then turning the power strip off once your workday is done. These types of equipment still use small amounts of power even when switched “off.” You can also save energy in your home office by replacing older bulbs with energy-saving LEDs.

SECO Energy District 6 Members Elect Michael E. Muffett as New Trustee

SECO Energy members voted to elect Mr. Michael E. Muffett as their new District 6 Trustee. District 6 members gathered at the Village View Community Church on February 4 to elect a Trustee to represent their District on SECO’s Board. Mr. Muffett lives in Summerfield and has been a SECO member for over 35 years.

 

SECO Energy is a not-for-profit electric cooperative, operated for and owned by its members. SECO members who reside in the District elect one of their fellow members to serve on SECO’s nine-member Board of Trustees. SECO Energy CEO Jim Duncan stated, “Collectively, the Board represents the SECO membership, meeting monthly to monitor the financial status of the cooperative while providing fiduciary oversight and participating in policy decisions that serve the best interests of the members at large.”

 

Along with Mr. Michael E. Muffett, Mr. Tom Ford and Mr. Mark L. Wade from Summerfield declared their willingness to serve the members of District 6 by submitting their letter of intent to run for Trustee. Elected Trustees serve a three-year term. Trustee-elect Muffett will attend his first official Board of Trustees’ meeting on Monday, March 30.

 

Trustee-elect Mr. Muffett is looking forward to his Board service. Mr. Muffett stated, “First, I want to thank the members for attending last night’s District 6 Meeting and thank you to my fellow candidates who were prepared to serve our fellow District 6 members of SECO’s Board. I am excited to begin my Board service and eager to use this opportunity to expand my service to our local communities.”

 

President Jerry Hatfield stated, “Congratulations, Mr. Muffett, on your election as District 6 Trustee. On behalf of my fellow Board officers and peers, we welcome you and look forward to working with you.”

 

CEO Jim Duncan stated, “Thank you District 6 members for gathering this evening to elect your new Trustee. Congratulations, Trustee-elect Muffett, on your election as District 6 Trustee. I would also like to thank Mr. Ford and Mr. Wade for their interest to serve as District 6 Trustee and the membership at large.”

SECO Trustee Muffett Recognized for Seminole Board Service

SECO Energy’s wholesale provider Seminole Electric, Inc. commended SECO’s District 6 Trustee Earl Muffett for his willingness to serve as a Seminole Trustee. Seminole’s CEO Lisa Johnson lauded Mr. Muffett’s Board service with a commemorative plaque and a letter of recognition. Mr. Muffett completed his 16-year tenure as a SECO Energy delegate on the Seminole Board in March 2017.

 

Mr. Muffett lives in Summerfield and is actively self-employed. After first becoming a SECO member in 1979, Mr. Muffett was elected to the SECO Board of Trustees in 1990. During his 27 years of service, Muffett was appointed as the Board’s Vice President, and was named a Seminole Voting Delegate, Seminole Alternate Delegate and Statewide Voting Delegate. Muffett was re-elected as District 6 Trustee by SECO members in February 2017.

 

As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, SECO’s nine Board of Trustees are members themselves who collectively serve as the members’ representatives within SECO. Through his work on SECO’s and Seminole’s Board, Mr. Muffett has devoted much of his free time in overseeing policies and procedures that allow SECO and Seminole to provide safe, reliable, affordable power to SECO members.

 

Seminole CEO Lisa Johnson states, “On behalf of Seminole, I express my most sincere gratitude for your service to Seminole as a member of our Board. It is so important for Seminole, and all cooperatives, to have willing, engaged individuals, like you, to serve in the critical role of Board Trustee to carry out the governance and fiduciary responsibilities required in support of our cooperative business model.”

 

Trustee Muffett states, “I am proud to have played a role in Seminole’s success and growth during my long-term service on Seminole’s Board. As a local business owner myself, I understand the complexity of business ownership and leadership, and how local businesses enrich the economy. It is refreshing to work with SECO Energy and Seminole cooperatives that believe offering members affordable, reliable power and excellent customer service are a top priority.”
