SECO Energy Launches Youth Tour Program for Local High School Juniors

SECO Energy is excited to introduce a new Youth Tour program for local high school juniors. The program is designed to inspire youth who are passionate about the energy industry, history, leadership, and adventure.

 

This unique initiative offers up to ten local high school juniors – who live in a home served by SECO Energy – the chance to attend the Tallahassee Youth Tour, an overnight conference from February 12-13, 2025. Participates will explore the Florida State Capitol and Legislative Chambers while gaining insight into the legislative process and the Cooperative Business model. SECO Energy will cover the cost of transportation, meals and hotel accommodation.

 

But that’s not all! After the Tallahassee Youth Tour, these ten participants will have a second opportunity to compete for one of two exclusive spots to represent SECO Energy at a once-in-a-lifetime, sponsored trip to tour our Nation’s Capital as a 2025 Washington Youth Tour Delegates.

 

In June 2025, the two selected delegates will join more than 1,800 peers from across the country for a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C., where they will visit iconic landmarks like the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Smithsonian Museums. They’ll also have the chance to meet elected officials, explore potential career paths, develop leadership skills, deepen their understanding of electric cooperatives, and build lasting friendships as they learn about our great nation and experience Washington like never before.

 

Whether students are interested in the energy industry, politics, history, or simply seeking an exciting adventure, the Youth Tour is a memorable experience that provides personal and professional growth.

Dear Members,

 

The SECO Energy Board of Trustees is a nine-member Board who are SECO members themselves. Our service area is divided into nine geographic Districts and a Trustee is elected from each District by the members who reside there. Collectively, the Board serves for the benefit of our membership.

 

The Board establishes, reviews and revises corporate policies to ensure that SECO Energy is fulfilling its Mission and Vision while executing its strategy. These members serve as the touchstone for the entire SECO membership as we uphold our Core Values of Safety, Member Commitment, Honesty and Integrity, Strong Work Ethic, Inclusive Culture, Accountability and Teamwork.

 

The SECO Energy Board of Trustees holds Officer elections yearly. Please join me in congratulating your 2023 Board Officers:

 

Board President

Gerald Anderson was re-elected Board President. President Anderson resides in The Villages and represents District 3. He has been a SECO Energy member since 2013 and was first elected to the Board in 2019. A skilled leader, President Anderson brings a wealth of experience to our Board.

 

Board Vice President

Scott Boyatt was re-elected as Vice President. Mr. Boyatt represents District 1, has been a SECO member since 2004 and was first elected in 2013. I respect and appreciate Mr. Boyatt’s dedication to and his service as a Board Trustee.

 

Board Secretary/Treasurer

District 9 Trustee Morgan Hatfield joins the Officers as the Secretary/Treasurer. Ms. Hatfield has served on the Board of Trustees since 2021 and has been a SECO member since 2019. Ms. Hatfield is enthusiastic in her commitment to our members and increasing her energy industry knowledge bank.

I am enormously proud of our Board Trustees, and it gives me great pleasure to announce that each of our Trustees has completed the full package of Director Training from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Each Trustee has completed the required coursework to earn the Director Gold Credential, which recognizes their commitment to advancing their knowledge and performing their fiduciary duty to the best of their ability.

SECO News June 2023 NRECA Legislative Conference Review

 

2023 Legislative Conference Review

SECO Energy sent three representatives to attend the 2023 National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. in April. In addition to convening with other electric cooperative representatives, the group met with federally elected officials and staff to encourage support for several key issues now facing the energy industry.

 

SECO Energy Board of Trustees President and District 3 Trustee Gerald Anderson, District 7 Trustee Joseph Kusiak and SECO Energy’s Senior Consultant for Civic, Charitable & Government Relations Kathy Judkins joined over 2,000 fellow cooperative attendees seeking to affect a positive impact for the energy industry through information and education.

 

Key topics of concern were supply chain bottlenecks, disaster relief assistance reform, and expediting the regulatory process for modernizing the nation’s electric grid.

Paperless statements help deter identity theft – no worries about your billing statements going missing from your mailbox. Reducing paper and spending less on postage and printing is a boost for the environment and the Cooperative.

 

To enroll in paperless billing, log in to your SmartHub account, choose Settings and Paperless Billing. Set the toggle switch to “ON” for “Go Paperless.”

 

PAY ONLINE THROUGH SMARTHUB

While in SmartHub, you can pay your bill electronically. Our online account management platform allows you to make payments using a debit card, credit card or electronic check without incurring a convenience fee. Those who wish to have their bill paid automatically can use SmartHub to enroll in a bank draft option. Choosing this connects your checking or savings account so payments are drawn directly on the due date.

 

SECO Energy members using SmartHub can review energy consumption history and past bills. SmartHub is accessible via desktop computers, smartphones, and tablets using the free app available for iPhone and Android users.

 

PAY BY PHONE

Members may still call 24/7 and make payments through SECO Energy’s interactive voice response (IVR) system using a debit or credit card or electronic check, with no fee.

 

BUDGET BILLING

For members who desire a consistent electric bill, SECO Energy’s Budget Billing may be the right option for you. Budget Billing will calculate a monthly payment based on the average use during the previous 12 months. Contact Customer Service to enroll or visit the website.

 

PAY IN-PERSON

For those who prefer to pay in person can visit a Member Service Center kiosk 24/7. You can utilize one of many payment locations through SECO-authorized bill payment vendors like Western Union, MoneyGram, Fidelity Express, and Vanilla Direct. SECO News June 2023 EV Off-Peak Charging Incentive

Members who own an electric vehicle (EV) and help SECO reduce demand during peak times by charging during Super Off-Peak hours (12 a.m. – 6 a.m.) can earn a $7 monthly incentive.

 

As EV ownership expands nationally, public electric vehicle charging stations are becoming more abundant. DOE.gov reports over 2,800 Level 2/DC Fast charging stations in Florida. Nationally, the number of public EV charging stations approaches 130,000, with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law targeting an extension of that to 500,000 by 2030.

 

The Department of Energy estimates that, not surprisingly, about 80% of EV charging occurs at home. As homeowners become more comfortable with the concept, language, and practicality of EV ownership, more garages will have Level 2 (240-volt) chargers installed.PHEV Auto Registrations

 

If you’re a member who owns an electric vehicle and charges at home, help us reduce demand by charging your EV during Super Off-Peak hours (12 a.m. – 6 a.m.) and earn $7 monthly. To be eligible, the all-electric EV must be owned or leased by the account holder, charged using a Level 1 or 2 Charger, and registered with a state Department of Motor Vehicles agency.

 

Hybrid, PHEV vehicles or street-legal golf carts sometimes called neighborhood electric vehicles (NEV) are not eligible for the $7 monthly charging incentive.

SECO Energy Board of Trustees Elects 2023 Officers

SECO Energy Board of Trustees elected its 2023 Officers during the March Trustee meeting. District 3 Trustee Gerald Anderson was re-elected Board President, Scott Boyatt District 1 Trustee was re-elected as Board Vice President and District 9 Trustee Morgan Hatfield was elected Secretary/Treasurer.  

 

SECO Energy is a not-for-profit electric cooperative operated for and owned by its members. Members from each District elect a fellow member for a three-year term to represent them on the SECO Board of Trustees. Collectively, the nine-member SECO Board of Trustees represents all members by meeting monthly to monitor the cooperative’s governance process, provide fiduciary oversight, and participate in policy decisions that serve the best interests of the members at large. 

 

Board President

District 3 Trustee Gerald Anderson was re-elected Board President for a second term. Mr. Anderson has been a SECO Energy member since 2013 and resides in The Villages. His first election to the SECO Energy Board of Trustees was in 2019. He earned his Credentialed Cooperative Director’s Certificate (CCD), his Board Leadership Certificate (BLC) and his Director Gold Credential (DGC) from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) in 2021.  

 

Board President Anderson said he is pleased to be involved with a group of such dedicated leaders. “I am humbled, honored, and thankful to the Trustees for their confidence in electing me President for another term. It’s exciting to work with such a diverse, well-educated Board and staff to chart the next course for SECO Energy. Our Board is well prepared to tackle what may prove to be the most challenging electric cooperative business environment of any generation.” 

 

Board Vice President

District 1 Trustee Scott Boyatt retained his office as Vice President. Mr. Boyatt has been a SECO Member since 2004 and resides in Clermont. His first election to the Board was in 2013. Since joining the SECO Board, he has completed the Credentialed Cooperative Director’s Certificate (CCD), the Board Leadership Certificate (BLC), and has achieved Director Gold Credentials from the NRECA. 

 

Mr. Boyatt stated, “Through my Board of Trustees service, I look forward to helping guide SECO Energy through the remarkable growth in our service area as we support SECO’s Strategy Map.”  

 

Board Secretary/Treasurer

District 9 Trustee Morgan Hatfield joins the Officers as its Secretary/Treasurer and has served on the Board of Trustees since 2021. Ms. Hatfield successfully completed her Credentialed Cooperative Director’s Certificate (CCD), the Board Leadership Certificate (BLC) and her Director Gold Credential (DGC) from the National Rural Electric Cooperatives Association (NRECA).  

 

Ms. Hatfield stated, “It is an honor to serve my neighbors and fellow SECO Energy members through my service on the Board of Trustees. It is especially meaningful to begin serving in an Officer position as Secretary/Treasurer.” 

 

CEO Curtis Wynn’s Comments

SECO Energy CEO Curtis Wynn applauded the commitment of the Board and its vision. “I truly believe we have a Board of Trustees that is in total alignment with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of SECO. These three Officers have demonstrated their dedication to improving their fiduciary oversight and industry knowledge. We all benefit from their service and are grateful for their efforts.” 

 

The NRECA offers a Director Certification Program for not-for-profit electric cooperative Trustees. It aims to help participants understand their roles and responsibilities and stay up to date on important issues and energy trends while preparing them to meet the challenges facing electric cooperatives now and in the future. The DGC recognizes directors/trustees seeking a credential that confirms their ongoing dedication to extending their knowledge and fulfilling their fiduciary duty in cooperative governance with the highest standards.

PURPA – Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978

The purpose of PURPA is the encouragement of investments in conservation and efficient use of facilities by electric utilities and equitable rates to electric customers. In 2009, PURPA required qualified electric utilities to consider three new 111(d) standards pursuant to the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA).

 

Most recently, the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) required non-regulated cooperatives (such as SECO Energy), municipal utilities, and state regulators (for regulated utilities) to consider adopting two new PURPA standards under Section 111(d).

 

There are two new PURPA 111(d) Standards Under IIJA that SECO Energy considered:

 

1. Demand-Response Practices
(A) In General – Each electric utility shall promote the use of demand-response and demand flexibility practices by commercial, residential, and industrial consumers to reduce electricity consumption during periods of unusually high demand.
(B) Rate Recovery
(i) In General – Each State regulatory authority shall consider establishing rate mechanisms allowing an electric utility with respect to which the State regulatory authority has ratemaking authority to timely recover the costs of promoting demand-response and demand flexibility practices in accordance with subparagraph (A).
(ii) Nonregulated Electric Utilities – A nonregulated electric utility may establish rate mechanisms for the timely recovery of the costs of promoting demand-response and demand flexibility practices in accordance with subparagraph (A).

 

2. Electric vehicle charging programs
Each State shall consider measures to promote greater electrification of the transportation sector, including the establishment of rates that—
(A) promote affordable and equitable electric vehicle charging options for residential, commercial, and public electric vehicle charging infrastructure;
(B) improve the customer experience associated with electric vehicle charging, including by reducing charging times for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles;
(C) accelerate third-party investment in electric vehicle charging for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles; and
(D) appropriately recover the marginal costs of delivering electricity to electric vehicles and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

 

Determination Process to Consider Adopting new PURPA Standards:

 

Following direction from NRECA, SECO did not conduct a live hearing. Instead, a public comment and response period was held between April 1, and June 1, 2023, enabling our members to be heard throughout this process. Also, an opportunity for Board Meeting attendance was provided wherein members were allowed to be heard on matters affecting the Cooperative. Consideration of standards focused on how implementation is consistent with the purpose of PURPA:

 

  • the promotion of energy conservation
  • optimization of the efficiency of use of facilities and resources, and
  • equitable rates to electric consumers

At the October 24, 2022, Board Meeting, SECO Energy’s Board of Trustees approved a Resolution to determine the hearing process to consider the standard and to engage in a public comment period. Notice of these objectives was published in November 2022 SECO News. During the open public comment period, members had the ability to share their views regarding the two new PURPA Standards SECO considered under the IIJA.

SECO Energy District 2 Members Re-elect Trustee Joyce Anderson

SECO Energy members who reside in District 2 re-elected Joyce Anderson as the District 2 Trustee to serve on SECO Energy’s Board of Trustees. The meeting was held on February 2 at the Sumter County School Board located within the District for the purpose of electing a Trustee to represent District 2 on SECO’s Board of Trustees.

 

SECO Energy is a not-for-profit electric cooperative, operated for and owned by its members. SECO’s service area is geographically divided into nine Districts. One Trustee is elected from each of the nine Districts to represent their fellow members on SECO’s nine-member Board of Trustees. Collectively, the Board represents the SECO membership, meeting monthly to monitor the financial status of the cooperative while providing fiduciary oversight and participating in policy decisions that serve the best interests of the membership at large.

 

Trustee Anderson along with Mr. Leon “Lee” N. Chitty of The Villages, Mr. Vincent Heuser of The Villages and Mr. Mark Moran also of The Villages all submitted a letter of intent to run for Trustee. SECO’s Bylaws currently require that the cooperative hold District Meetings. Subsequently, Florida Statute requires SECO to hold in-person elections; therefore, the cooperative continues to hold District Meetings as a means of electing Trustees. A drive-thru voting option was available for members for added convenience and to encourage participation.

 

A SECO member since 2017, Mrs. Anderson was first elected to SECO Energy’s Board of Trustees in 2020. She has earned the Director Gold Credential from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) which is the highest Trustee accreditation from the NRECA. Mrs. Anderson also serves in an officer position on the Board of Trustees as Secretary-Treasurer.

 

Trustee Anderson enjoys serving her fellow District 2 neighbors. Mrs. Anderson stated, “Thank you to all District 2 members who were able to attend the District Meeting and for once again entrusting me to serve as your Trustee. It has been my honor to serve as the District 2 Trustee for the last three years. I have enjoyed learning about SECO Energy, serving the membership as a whole and continuing my Board of Trustees education through the NRECA and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my community.”

 

Board President Gerald Anderson stated, “Congratulations, Mrs. Anderson, on your re-election as District 2 Trustee. And I also thank the District 2 members who attended the Meeting and participated in our cooperative’s governance process. On behalf of my fellow Board Officers and peers, we are excited to support SECO Energy’s Mission and Vision through our Board service.”

SECO Energy District 5 Trustee Shannon Wright Earns Credentialed Cooperative Director Certificate

SECO Energy congratulates District 5 Trustee Shannon Wright on earning her Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) Certificate from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Earning the CCD is the initial step in the NRECA’s Director Education program that is designed to assist cooperative Trustees to meet the challenges facing electric cooperatives.

 

To earn the CCD certification from the NRECA, directors/trustees complete five courses that focus on basic cooperative governance and the essential skills needed for cooperative directors/trustees. The CCD prepares directors/trustees to fulfill their fiduciary duty as elected officials serving on behalf of their membership. Upon completion of the five CCD required courses, directors/trustees are awarded the Credential Cooperative Director Certificate.

 

SECO Energy is a not-for-profit electric cooperative, operating for and owned by its members. SECO’s nine-member Board of Trustees consists of members who live in SECO’s service area. They are elected to oversee the governance of the cooperative. Each Trustee on the Board is elected by the members who reside in his/her District. Collectively, the Trustees are responsible for establishing, reviewing and revising corporate policies to ensure that SECO continues to preserve reliable, affordable service for all members.

 

Trustee Wright welcomes the opportunity to expand her energy industry knowledge. SECO Energy District 3 Members Re-elect Gerald Anderson as Trustee

SECO Energy members who reside in District 3 re-elected Gerald Anderson as the District 3 Trustee on SECO Energy’s Board of Trustees. The meeting was held in the District on Tuesday, February 8, at the Savannah Center in Sumter County for the purpose of electing a Trustee to represent District 3 on SECO’s Board of Trustees.

 

SECO Energy is a not-for-profit electric cooperative, operated for and owned by its members. SECO’s service area is geographically divided into nine Districts. One Trustee is elected from each of the nine Districts to represent their fellow members on SECO’s nine-member Board of Trustees. Collectively, the Board represents the SECO membership, meeting monthly to monitor the financial status of the cooperative while providing fiduciary oversight and participating in policy decisions that serve the best interests of the membership at large.

 

Along with Gerald Anderson, Hamilton McLean of The Villages submitted a letter of intent to run for Trustee. SECO’s Bylaws currently require that the cooperative hold District Meetings. Subsequently, Florida Statute requires SECO to hold in-person elections; therefore, the cooperative continues to hold District Meetings as a means of electing Trustees. A drive-thru voting option was available for members for added convenience, to encourage participation, to practice social distancing and to reduce the size of the indoor meeting.

 

A SECO member since 2013, Trustee Anderson was first elected to SECO Energy’s Board of Trustees in 2019. Mr. Anderson currently serves as Board of Trustees Vice President and has completed the educational requirements from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) to earn the Director Gold Credential – the highest Trustee accreditation from the NRECA.

 

Trustee Anderson is eager to continue his Board service. Mr. Anderson stated, “I want first to thank all of the District 3 members who attended the District Meeting and cast a vote. Serving on SECO’s Board of Trustees and as Vice President is an honor, and I am looking forward to continuing to serve SECO Energy’s membership as a Trustee. Thank you to all District 3 members who placed their trust in me as their District representative.”

On behalf of my fellow Board officers and peers, we are excited to continue working with you to ensure SECO Energy’s future success. SECO Energy Board of Trustees Selects New CEO

SECO Energy’s Board of Trustees recently voted to hire a new CEO to step into the shoes of retiring CEO Jim Duncan, who led the cooperative as CEO for most of his long and distinguished 43-year tenure. SECO Energy currently provides electric service to 220,000 homes and businesses across seven counties in fast-growing Central Florida. SECO Energy is a J.D. Power award-winning electric utility and is a frontrunner statewide and nationally with the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).

 

The candidate selected by the Board of Trustees from both internal executives and external applicants is Mr. Curtis Wynn who has been the President and CEO of Roanoke Electric Cooperative in North Carolina since 1997, a not-for-profit electric utility that serves 14,000 members. Prior to that, Mr. Wynn was the Vice President of Member Services, Information Technology, Marketing and Economic Development from 1981 to 1997 at West Florida Electric Cooperative. Mr. Wynn steps in at SECO Energy in time to transition into Jim Duncan’s departure date of January 3, 2022.

 

Mr. Wynn is married with three children and is a graduate of Troy University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration & Management Information Systems. With nearly 42 years of experience in the electric cooperative industry, Mr. Wynn’s resume reflects a long list of awards and accomplishments showing a history of supporting creative solutions that are turning the challenges of the energy industry evolution into major opportunities.

 

Mr. Wynn also serves or has served on a variety of boards including: immediate past board president, National Rural Electric Cooperatives Association (NRECA); past president, vice president and secretary-treasurer of North Carolina Electric Membership Cooperative; board member, North Carolina’s Association of Electric Cooperatives; board member, Meridian Cooperative (formerly Southeastern Data Cooperative – SEDC); and past nominating committee member, CoBank.

 

SECO Energy is a not-for-profit electric cooperative, operated for and owned by its members. SECO’s nine-member Board of Trustees consists of members who live in SECO’s service area. They are elected to oversee the governance of the cooperative. Each Trustee on the Board is elected by the members who reside in his/her District. SECO Energy Trustee Scott Boyatt Maintains Director Gold Credential

SECO Energy congratulates District 1 Trustee Scott Boyatt on maintaining his Director Gold Credential (DGC) from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). Mr. Boyatt first earned his DGC in January 2019.

 

According to the NRECA, the DGC recognizes directors/trustees who desire a tangible credential that demonstrates their ongoing commitment to advancing their knowledge and performing their fiduciary duty to the best of their ability. The DGC offers a continuing education path for directors/trustees beyond the Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) and Board Leadership Certificate (BLC).

They are elected to oversee the governance of the cooperative. Each Trustee on the Board is elected by the members who reside in his/her District. Trustee Boyatt lives in Clermont and has been a SECO member since 2004. Mr. Boyatt was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2013.

Trustee Dennison currently serves in an officer position as President of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Dennison lives in Ocala and has been a SECO member since 1999. Mr. Dennison was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2015.
